The Breakers, Worth Avenue, Flagler's Gilded Age legacy, JFK's Cold War shelter, and the Winter Equestrian Capital of the World
Palm Beach Island -- separated from West Palm Beach by Lake Worth Lagoon, accessible by bridge from PBI in 15 minutes -- is the wealthiest per-capita municipality in the United States and one of the world's most exclusive enclaves, home to approximately 10,000 year-round residents (and 100,000+ in winter season). Worth Avenue (the 'Rodeo Drive of the East' -- 4 blocks from Lake Worth to the Atlantic) houses Chanel, Hermès, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and 200+ luxury boutiques in Addison Mizner's 1920s Spanish-Mediterranean villas and hidden 'Via' courtyards. The Breakers Hotel (completed 1926, entirely rebuilt after fires in 1903 and 1925, now a Forbes Five-Star property) was built by Henry Flagler, the co-founder of Standard Oil who extended the Florida East Coast Railway to Palm Beach in 1894 -- effectively creating the Florida winter resort industry as we know it.
Henry Morrison Flagler (1830-1913) -- co-founder of Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller, one of the wealthiest men in American history (net worth equivalent to $100+ billion in 2024 dollars) -- visited Florida in 1878 and recognized that the state's winter climate was ideal for wealthy northeasterners seeking warm-weather respite. He methodically extended the Florida East Coast Railway south from Jacksonville: to St. Augustine (1888), to Daytona (1892), to West Palm Beach (1894), and -- most audaciously -- over 128 miles of open ocean to Key West via the Seven Mile Bridge (the 'Overseas Railroad', completed 1912). Flagler built The Royal Poinciana Hotel (5,000 rooms -- the world's largest wooden structure when built) and The Breakers on Palm Beach Island. He died in 1913, eight months after the Key West extension opened, from a fall down the stairs at Whitehall (his 73-room Beaux-Arts Palm Beach mansion, now the Flagler Museum).
Whitehall -- Henry Flagler's 73-room Beaux-Arts mansion built in 1902 for his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan (at a cost of $2.5 million, equivalent to $80 million in 2024 dollars) -- was described by the New York Herald upon its completion as 'more wonderful than any palace in Europe.' The mansion features 14 different architectural styles including the Grand Hall (55 feet tall, modeled on the Paris Opéra), the Louis XIV music room, the Italian Renaissance library, and the Gilded Age State Guest Suite. Flagler bequeathed Whitehall to Mary Lily; she sold it after his death and it became the Whitehall Hotel (1925), with a 10-story tower added behind the mansion. The Flagler Museum Foundation purchased the estate in 1959, removed the hotel tower, and restored Whitehall to its 1902 appearance. The museum's most unusual exhibit: Flagler's private Railcar No. 91, a 1886 luxury private railroad car in which Flagler traveled the length of Florida.
Mary Lily Kenan Flagler (1867-1917) inherited Henry Flagler's entire estate -- estimated at $100 million (approximately $2.8 billion in 2024 dollars) -- when he died in 1913. She remarried in 1916 to Robert Worth Bingham, a Louisville judge. She died in 1917 at age 50, 14 months after marrying Bingham. Bingham inherited $5 million from her estate (and ultimately used the inheritance to purchase the Louisville Courier-Journal, which the Bingham family owned for six decades). In 1917-1918, rumors circulated -- and decades of subsequent investigation have never conclusively disproved -- that Mary Lily was administered morphine by a doctor affiliated with Bingham, accelerating her death. A body exhumation in 1917 found morphine in her system. No charges were ever filed. Bingham went on to become US Ambassador to the United Kingdom under FDR.
West Palm Beach proper -- across Lake Worth Lagoon from Palm Beach Island -- has its own attractions distinct from the island's luxury enclave: Peanut Island (a 79-acre island created in 1918 from dredged sand, accessible by water taxi from Riviera Beach Marina) contains a nuclear fallout shelter constructed in 1961 by the US Navy and Army Corps of Engineers for President John F. Kennedy's use during the Cuban Missile Crisis -- the shelter was kept secret until 1974. The island is now a public park with camping, snorkeling, and beach access. Clematis Street (downtown West Palm Beach's main entertainment district) has a dense concentration of bars, restaurants, and live music venues, culminating in Centennial Square with water fountains and a stage used for ClematisByNight concerts (Thursdays). The Norton Museum of Art (the largest art museum between Washington DC and Miami) houses collections of American, Chinese, Contemporary, and European art.
President John F. Kennedy's family owned Palm Beach estate (now the Kennedy Compound at 1095 North Ocean Boulevard) was his regular winter vacation destination -- the family called it the 'Winter White House.' When the Cuban Missile Crisis began in October 1962 (Soviet nuclear missiles discovered in Cuba, 90 miles from Key West), the US Secret Service determined that Kennedy needed a protected fallout shelter within reach of the Palm Beach estate. Construction of the Peanut Island shelter began in December 1961 and was completed in a few weeks by Navy Seabees and Army Corps of Engineers. The shelter -- an 8x8 foot corrugated steel and concrete structure, stocked with food, water, medical supplies, and communications equipment -- was designed to protect Kennedy and a small staff for 30 days after a nuclear strike. It was maintained as an active presidential shelter through the Kennedy presidency and kept classified until 1974.
The greater Palm Beach area includes two distinctive destinations within 30-45 minutes of PBI airport: Wellington (15 miles west of PBI) is the Winter Equestrian Capital of the World -- the Winter Equestrian Festival (January-April, 12 consecutive weeks, the longest running hunter-jumper horse show in the world) draws 500,000 spectators and 5,000 horses to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Wellington's equestrian community includes Olympic riders and show-jumping royalty; the Winter Equestrian Festival course includes $1 million grand prix events. Boca Raton (26 miles south of PBI) was largely designed by architect Addison Mizner in the 1920s -- Mizner's Spanish-Mediterranean Revival architecture (pink stucco, barrel-tile roofs, arcades, fountains) defines Boca's downtown, the Boca Raton Resort & Club (now the Waldorf Astoria Boca Raton, Mizner's 1926 original hotel), and the city's architectural character.
Addison Mizner (1872-1933) was, technically, an untrained architect -- he attended University of Salamanca in Spain, apprenticed briefly to a San Francisco architect, and moved to Palm Beach in 1918, ostensibly to die (he was in poor health). Instead he began designing houses for wealthy Palm Beach residents in a Spanish-Mediterranean Revival style drawing on Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Moorish precedents. His designs -- informal asymmetry, loggias and arcades, tiled fountains, wrought iron, massive wooden doors, clay barrel-tile roofs -- became synonymous with 'Florida architecture' and influenced residential design across the state for a century. Worth Avenue's hidden 'Via' courtyards are Mizner's invention. His method: design the ruins first, then fill them in -- 'I keep forgetting I am building a new house and not remodeling an old one.' Mizner's buildings are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places; his architectural vocabulary still dominates Boca Raton, Palm Beach Island, and much of South Florida luxury real estate.
Palm Beach County experiences its highest tourism demand November through April (the winter snowbird season, when Northeast and Midwest residents migrate to Florida for warm weather). Flights to PBI from Boston, New York, Chicago, and Cleveland fill quickly from December 1. Book 8-12 weeks ahead for winter travel and expect fares 30-50% higher than summer. September-October and May-June offer the lowest PBI fares.
West Palm Beach (PBI) is located 67 miles north of Miami (MIA) and 47 miles north of Fort Lauderdale (FLL). Both alternative airports have significantly more flights and often lower fares -- particularly FLL, which is Spirit, Frontier, and JetBlue's South Florida base. Ground transportation from FLL to Palm Beach takes approximately 1 hour via I-95; from MIA, allow 90 minutes. Compare all three airports for the best combination of fare and travel time.
Southwest Airlines operates multiple nonstops to PBI from Chicago Midway (MDW), Baltimore-Washington (BWI), Nashville (BNA), Denver (DEN), and other cities, but Southwest does not share its inventory with Google Flights, Kayak, Expedia, or any third-party aggregator. FareOptic's deal cards reflect Southwest pricing when Southwest provides the best fare, but always verify and book at southwest.com directly. Missing Southwest is the most common mistake in PBI airfare comparison.
Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is exceptionally convenient for Palm Beach Island travelers -- the airport is 3 miles from downtown West Palm Beach and 8 miles from Palm Beach Island (15-20 minutes by taxi or rideshare, $20-30). Palm Beach County's tri-rail connects PBI to Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Rental cars are available at the terminal. Uber/Lyft from PBI to The Breakers or Worth Avenue typically runs $18-25 with no surge.
American Airlines is the dominant carrier at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), operating nonstops from its hub cities including Charlotte (CLT), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), New York (JFK, LGA), Philadelphia (PHL), Miami (MIA), and Los Angeles (LAX). American's Miami hub -- just 67 miles south of PBI -- feeds American's PBI service and gives access to American's international network via MIA. For travelers from mid-Atlantic and Northeast states, American's CLT and PHL hubs typically offer the most frequency to PBI.
CLT to PBI (1h 40m nonstop; DFW to PBI (2h 40m nonstop; ORD to PBI (2h 40m nonstop; JFK to PBI (2h 30m nonstop; LAX to PBI (5h 15m nonstop

Southwest does not appear on third-party search engines (Kayak, Google Flights, Expedia), so comparison shopping for PBI always requires checking Southwest directly at southwest.com. For budget-conscious travelers -- particularly from the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic -- Southwest's PBI fares frequently beat the major carriers by 25-45%.
MDW to PBI (2h 30m nonstop; BWI to PBI (2h 20m nonstop; DEN to PBI (3h 55m nonstop; LAS to PBI (4h 35m nonstop; MCO to PBI (55m nonstop
Delta Air Lines operates PBI with multiple daily nonstops from Atlanta (ATL) and New York (JFK, LGA). The Atlanta-Palm Beach winter snowbird corridor is one of Delta's highest-yield leisure routes, with premium cabin passengers from suburban Atlanta and the Southeast booking extended stays at Palm Beach's luxury resorts and Breakers hotel. Delta also connects PBI to Detroit (DTW), Minneapolis (MSP), and Boston (BOS). Delta's SkyMiles partners extend PBI connections to international markets via the ATL hub.
