Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP) is the Texas Gulf Coast's main gateway -- serving Padre Island National Seashore, the USS Lexington, Selena's hometown, and some of the best fishing on the Gulf. American, Southwest, United, and Delta all serve CRP from major hub cities.

The longest undeveloped US beach, Selena's legacy, whooping cranes, and one of the world's great aircraft carrier museums
Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) -- located 12 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, accessible via Park Road 22 -- protects 70 miles of undeveloped Gulf of Mexico barrier island beach: the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the United States and one of the longest in the world. The northern 5 miles (North Beach) are accessible by car; the remaining 65 miles of the Malaquite and South Beach areas are accessible only by 4-wheel-drive vehicle with reduced tire pressure (10-15 psi) or by boat. PINS is critical nesting habitat for the Kemp's ridley sea turtle (the world's most endangered sea turtle) -- the National Park Service facilitates an annual turtle egg-incubation program, and public releases of hatchlings (typically July-August) draw hundreds of spectators to North Beach. PINS also sits on the Central Flyway, one of North America's four major bird migration corridors, with 380+ bird species recorded.
A 1947 home movie filmed at Rancho Nuevo beach (Tamaulipas, Mexico, 100 miles south of Padre Island) showed an arribada (mass nesting event) estimated at 40,000 Kemp's ridley sea turtles nesting on a single beach in a single day. By 1985, the entire world population had declined to fewer than 702 nesting females -- a collapse driven by egg collection (eggs were considered an aphrodisiac and sold commercially in Mexico for decades), drowning in shrimp trawl nets, and coastal development. A binational US-Mexico recovery program began in the 1970s, transplanting eggs from Rancho Nuevo to Padre Island to establish a secondary nesting population; shrimp trawler turtle excluder devices (TEDs) were mandated in 1989. By 2024, the Kemp's ridley population had recovered to approximately 22,000 nesting females -- still critically endangered, but a genuine conservation success story.
The USS Lexington (CV-16, 'The Blue Ghost') -- an Essex-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943 and decommissioned in 1991 after 48 years of service -- is permanently moored on Corpus Christi Bay as a naval aviation museum and educational attraction. The Lexington was nicknamed 'The Blue Ghost' by Tokyo Rose (Japanese wartime radio propaganda) because the Japanese military reported sinking her multiple times and she kept reappearing; the ship was actually struck by bombs and torpedoes but survived all attacks. The ship displays 20+ aircraft on the flight deck and hangar deck, WWII-era exhibits, and a flight simulator. The Texas State Aquarium (adjacent to the Lexington) is the largest aquarium on the Texas Gulf Coast and one of the largest between Monterey, California and the New England Aquarium -- featuring Gulf of Mexico ecosystems, Caribbean reef tanks, otter and dolphin exhibits, and a wing dedicated to birds of prey.
Tokyo Rose was the American nickname for approximately a dozen English-speaking Japanese female radio broadcasters who hosted propaganda programs aimed at demoralizing American servicemen in the Pacific Theater (1942-1945). The broadcasts mixed popular music with false news reports of American defeats, sinkings, and the faithlessness of American women on the home front. The Japanese military reported sinking the USS Lexington (then operating as a blue-painted night carrier) multiple times -- and each time, she reappeared in the Pacific. American sailors began calling her 'The Blue Ghost' because she kept refusing to be sunk despite Tokyo Rose's repeated death announcements. After the war, a California woman named Iva Toguri D'Aquino was convicted of treason as 'Tokyo Rose' (she was actually one of several broadcasters and denied being Tokyo Rose). President Ford pardoned her in 1977 after evidence emerged that prosecution witnesses had fabricated testimony.
The Port of Corpus Christi is the fifth-busiest port in the United States by total tonnage and the largest crude oil export port in the Western Hemisphere -- handling approximately 340 million barrels of crude oil annually, primarily from the Permian Basin via pipeline. The port's development as an oil export terminal (dramatically expanded after the US crude oil export ban was lifted in 2015) transformed Corpus Christi from a mid-sized regional port into a global energy hub. Corpus Christi is also the hometown of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (1971-1995) -- the Queen of Tejano music, whose crossover success brought Tejano (the Texas-Mexican musical fusion of norteño, cumbia, and R&B) to mainstream American audiences before her murder at age 23. Selena's childhood home, her boutique Boutiques Q on Leopard Street, the Mirador de la Flor (memorial overlooking Corpus Christi Bay), and the H-E-B grocery stores (Selena was a spokesperson) are local pilgrimage sites.
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez had sold more than 35 million records by age 23, won a Grammy (Best Mexican-American Album, 1994 -- the first Grammy ever won by a Tejano artist), and was recording her first English-language pop album ('Dreaming of You', released posthumously July 1995) when she was killed by Yolanda Saldívar, the founder and manager of her fan club, on March 31, 1995. Saldívar, who had been embezzling from Selena's businesses, shot Selena at a Corpus Christi Days Inn where she had come to retrieve financial records. Selena was 23 years old. 'Dreaming of You' became the first album by a Latin artist to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. EMI executive Dan Goodman called her 'the Hispanic Madonna'; her crossover trajectory suggests she might have achieved Madonna-level mainstream American and international success. The film 'Selena' (1997) starring Jennifer Lopez as Selena was Lopez's breakout role.
Port Aransas -- a beach town on Mustang Island, 16 miles northeast of Corpus Christi via ferry (free, State Highway 361) or causeway -- is the Texas Gulf Coast's most popular beach destination: a compact, car-accessible town with excellent fishing (redfish, speckled trout, flounder), a shrimp fleet, surf shops, and a relaxed resort atmosphere. Mustang Island State Park (adjacent) has 5 miles of beach. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (60 miles north of Corpus Christi on the Lamar Peninsula, accessible by road or tour boat from Rockport) is the primary winter habitat of the whooping crane (Grus americana) -- the tallest bird in North America and one of the most endangered species on the continent. The entire wild whooping crane population (approximately 600 birds as of 2024) migrates annually from Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, Canada (nesting grounds) to Aransas (wintering grounds) -- a 2,500-mile round trip. Whooping crane boat tours from Rockport (November-March) are one of Texas's most distinctive wildlife experiences.
The whooping crane population reached its lowest recorded point in 1941-42: 15 individuals. A combination of habitat destruction, hunting (whooping cranes were shot for sport and feathers throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries), and collision with power lines had driven the species to the edge of extinction. A 1937 executive order created Aransas National Wildlife Refuge to protect the birds' wintering grounds; hunting was prohibited. By 2024, the self-sustaining wild population (the Wood Buffalo/Aransas flock) had grown to approximately 600 birds -- still critically endangered, but an extraordinary recovery from 15. The recovery required 83 years of sustained effort: refuge protection, captive breeding programs, an experimental flock trained by ultralight aircraft to migrate (the 'Operation Migration' program, 2001-2016), power line marking, and a trans-national Canada-US conservation partnership.
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) is the main connection hub for Corpus Christi (CRP). American Eagle operates 4-6 daily round trips between DFW and CRP on regional jets (Embraer 175 or CRJ-700). Build 75-90 minutes of connection time at DFW -- it is one of the world's largest airports and gate-to-gate transfers can take 20-40 minutes alone.
If your travel originates in a city Southwest serves from Houston Hobby (HOU) -- Chicago Midway, Baltimore, Nashville, Denver, Las Vegas, and 30+ other cities -- the HOU-CRP Southwest nonstop (55 minutes) is often the fastest and cheapest route to Corpus Christi. Southwest's HOU service is not visible on aggregators; check southwest.com. HOU is also closer to some Houston neighborhoods than IAH.
Texas Gulf Coast spring break season (primarily early-mid March) is the busiest travel period for CRP -- Texas A&M, University of Texas, and dozens of college and high school groups descend on Corpus Christi and nearby beaches. Flights, hotels, and rental cars fill quickly and prices spike. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for March travel, or consider April (excellent weather, dramatically lower prices after spring break).
Corpus Christi's location on the Texas Gulf Coast makes it an ideal combined road trip with San Antonio (140 miles northwest, 2 hours) or Houston (210 miles northeast, 3.5 hours). Consider flying into San Antonio (SAT) or Houston (HOU/IAH), spending time in both cities, and ending at Corpus Christi before flying home from CRP -- or vice versa. One-way car rental drop fees are minimal between Texas cities.
